This article explains what a Handicap Index is, how it's calculated, and how to use it to get a Course Handicap for fair play on any course.
What is a Handicap Index?
A Handicap Index® is a numerical measure of a golfer's demonstrated playing ability. It is designed to represent your potential ability, not your average score. The primary purpose of a handicap is to allow players of different skill levels to compete on a fair and equitable basis.
Your Handicap Index is portable, meaning you can use it on any rated golf course around the world.
How is a Handicap Index Calculated?
Your Handicap Index is calculated using a standardized formula set by the World Handicap System™ (WHS). It is not a simple average. The key principles include:
- Posting Acceptable Scores: You must post scores from rounds played under the Rules of Golf, including 9-hole scores.
- Score Differentials: The system calculates a Score Differential for each round. This considers your Adjusted Gross Score, the Course Rating™, and the Slope Rating® of the tees you played.
- Best 8 of 20: Your Handicap Index is based on the best 8 Score Differentials from your most recent 20 rounds. This emphasizes your potential.
- Calculation Frequency: Your Handicap Index updates overnight after you post an acceptable score (or at scheduled update times).
Key Terms to Know
- Course Rating: Indicates the difficulty of a course for a "scratch" golfer under normal conditions.
- Slope Rating: Indicates the relative difficulty of a course for a "bogey" golfer compared to a scratch golfer. It ranges from 55 to 155, with 113 being standard.
- Course Handicap: The number of strokes you receive on a specific course and a specific set of tees. This is the number you use to adjust your score.
- Playing Handicap: Your Course Handicap adjusted for any format allowances (e.g., 85% for four-ball play). This is the number of strokes you actually give or get during a competition.
How to Get Your Course Handicap for a Round
You do not use your Handicap Index directly. Before you play, you must convert it to a Course Handicap.
Formula:Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating ÷ 113)
Easier Method:
- Use the official GHIN App or our club's handicap computer kiosk.
- Select the course and the tees you will be playing.
- The app or kiosk will instantly calculate your Course Handicap for you.
How to Post a Score
Maintaining an accurate handicap relies on posting every acceptable round.
- Via Mobile App (Recommended): Use the official GHIN app. You can post immediately after your round, selecting the correct course, tees, and date.
- Online: Log in to your account on our association website and post in the handicap section.
- At the Course: Use the handicap computer in the pro shop.
Remember: Post your score as soon as possible after your round.
Common Questions (FAQ)
Q: How many scores do I need to get a Handicap Index?
A: You need to post scores from 54 holes (which can be any combination of 9 or 18-hole rounds).
Q: What if I have a bad day or don't finish every hole?
A: You must still post. Use Net Double Bogey as your maximum score on any hole for handicap purposes. If you don't finish a hole, record your most likely score for that hole.
Q: Can I post a score from a round I played alone?
A: Yes. The World Handicap System allows scores from rounds played alone, provided you follow the Rules of Golf.
Q: My handicap seems to have changed drastically. Why?
A: This can be due to exceptional score reduction, posting an exceptionally good score, or the annual update cycle where soft and hard caps are applied to protect against large increases.
Q: Who do I contact if I think there's an error in my calculation?
A: Please contact our Handicap Committee at [Email Address] or speak to the golf professional in the shop.
